Sustainability

Sustainability is about preserving our world and its people. We all depend on just one planet. So all of us need to work together and find ways to use less energy, water and other resources, as well as reduce the waste we generate.

We aim to stay at the forefront of the fight against climate change by setting science-based targets to reduce CO2 emissions from our own manufacturing. We also focus our efforts where we can make the biggest difference to reduce climate change by addressing deforestation in our supply chain.

As a food company, it is vital to secure sustainable supplies of key raw materials by empowering farmers and their communities to become more productive and climate-smart.

We use our global scale and focus where we can make the biggest difference: sustainable agriculture and reducing the environmental footprint of our own operations. Our updated sustainability goals for 2020 are an ambitious end-to-end approach.

Sustainable Agriculture Goals

  • All cocoa will ultimately be sustainably sourced, mainly through Cocoa Life
  • 100% of European biscuits (ex. E Europe) made with Harmony wheat by 2022
  • Maintain 100% RSPO palm oil 100% palm oil traceable to the mill from suppliers with aligned policies
  • 100% cage-free eggs in U.S., Canada by 2020 and EU and rest of world (ex. Ukraine, Russia, China) by 2025

Environmental Footprint Goals

  • Reduce absolute CO2 emissions from manufacturing 15%*
  • Reduce water use by 10%* at priority locations where water is most scarce
  • Reduce total waste in manufacturing 20%*
  • Eliminate 65,000 metric tons of packaging

*by 2020 vs. 2013 baseline

Mondelez Thailand

Mondelez Thailand is determined to be part of our global sustainability goals. We take an important step to preserve environment.

Khon Kaen plant

Our Khon Kaen plant manufactures Tang powdered beverage in a facility powered by 100 percent renewable energy.

The initiative supports our new Sustainability 2020 Goal on reducing CO2 emissions from energy use in manufacturing by delivering an absolute annual saving of approximately 2,000 tons of CO2.

The plant made the switch from grid electricity – generated predominantly from fossil fuels – to electricity from a nearby sugar mill. The sugar mill burns sugar cane waste (Bagasse) to generate electricity, steam and hot water. The initiative is not only delivering benefits for the environment, but has eliminated the need to invest in a major project to increase the site’s electricity supply capacity. The new renewable energy supply is more reliable, eliminates power outages by 96 percent and also help reduce our energy costs. The Khon Kaen plant is recognized as the first site in the company to be supplied by 100% renewable energy.

Ladkrabang plant

Ladkrabang plant is a sourcing hub for Gum and Candy in the Asia Pacific region. Sustainability and environmental protection are our main focus. We have developed an energy management program aiming to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. We carefully consider the potential environmental impact especially on local communities from our operations. We have been working on waste reduction and natural resources optimization with Three R’s (3Rs- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) strategy, which is the core element of a sustainable management in Ladkrabang plant.

In 2017 - 2018, Ladkrabang plant has switched the power supply from fossil fuels to the renewable energy source and steam supply from LadKrabang Cogeneration Power Plant to reduce the air pollution which causes climate change. As a result, our environmental footprints have improved significantly. Our water usage has been reduced by 10% or 17,000 cubic meters per year and CO2 emission has decreased by 16,886 tons or 64% per year. This initiative also helps us save energy costs by 11%.
